The Santa Barbara Track & Field
Camp focuses on specific technical analysis of the athlete with a individualized
approach to the training camp. This allows for much needed personalized training
in order to maximize your potential. Along with the coaches, a trained staff
and professional athletes will work side by side with you.
**NEW IN 2008** - PARENTS Q&A SESSION WITH THE
COACHES
Prior to check-out on Thursday, July 24, all parents are
welcome to take part in an informal question and answer session with NCAA
Division I coaches. Pick their brains regarding what it takes for students
to get into college academically and/or athletically as well as what to expect
throughout a students full college career.
Pete Dolan, Director of Track & Field - Middle & Long Distance
Coach
Pete has become a recognizable figure on the national
scene with nationally ranked cross country squads and nationally ranked middle
and long distance athletes in Track. In 2006 was an especially remarkable
year with two athletes ranked in the top 20 in the United States at 800m and
10,000m, advancing three athletes to the National Championship (3k steeple,
5k and 10k) as well qualifying both the Men and Women to the Cross Country
National Championships with the women finishing 9th in the country. The success
of the program led Coach Dolan to join a prestigious group of coaches as he
was named 2006 West Region Cross Country Coach of the Year. He has worked numerous
camps throughout his career including the Arthur Lydiard distance camps in
Santa Barbara. (more)
Keith
Baker- Throws Coach
Coach Baker enters the Gaucho program after a
succesful career as a multi-events student-athlete for the Alabama Crimson
Tide. He was a NCAA National Indoor Track & Field Championship qualifier in
the heptathlon, holds the school record in the event, and also ranks third
in school history in the outdoor Decathlon. Prior to his successful career
at Alabama, Baker was a junior college All-American for Lane Community College
in Oregon. He enters the Gaucho program after spending a year as a graduate
assistant coach for the Crimson Tide bringing with him an incredible work
ethic and love for the sport. (more)
Jenny
Kenyon - Sprints & Hurdles
Coach Kenyan enters her third year as the UC-Santa
Barbara sprints, hurdles, and jumps coach where she has begun to elevate the
Gaucho squad to new hights. In just two short years her athletes won two conference
championships, broken a school record and set over twenty UCSB top-10 all-time
marks. Prior to UCSB Kenyon coached at DePaul University where she oversaw
seven USA-Conference champions, five NCAA Regional qualifiers as well as having
athletes break numerous school records. Coach Kenyon competed at the University
of Oregon finishing her Duck career as the fifth best heptathlete
in school history. She has experience with numerous summer camps as a member
of the University of Oregon's Track & Field
squad.

David Monico (Camp Director) - Now currently residing in New York City pursuing a career in international development, Monico stays on managing the week long camp and will once again return as an assistant coach for the Distance group. He came to UCSB as a 9:32 two-miler and 4:24 miler out of Piedmont Hills H.S. in San Jose, CA and finished his career for the Gauchos earning All Big West honors at 5,000m in 2004.

Jeff Jacobs - Head Men's Cross Country and Track & Field Coach, Coastal Carolina University - Coach Jacobs returns to the Santa Barbara Track & Field camp after completing his 4th year at Coastal Carolina University. He has helped lead the Chanticleers to numerous school records, conference accolades, and NCAA regional and national qualifying berths (including the programs first All-American). Jacobs began coaching in 1991, but took a few years off before returning as an Assistant Coach at UC-Santa Barbara in 1999. From 1999 until his departure in 2004, he assisted with the re-writing of the record book and the progression to a national class squad in both the men's and women's programs.
Kylie McCuen - One of the Gauchos most successful sprinters. McCuen won back to back 200m and 400m titles in '05 and '06 at the Big West Championships. She holds personal bests of 23.79 at 200m and 54.11 in the 400m dash. In 2005 she was named the Big West Track Athlete of the Year. McCuen came to the Gauchos from Brea Olinda H.S. and is currently pursuing her Master's in Teaching.
Stephanie Rothstein - Returning for her 4th year on staff, Rothstein continues to pursue her running career as a professional training in Eugene, OR under acclaimed distance coach Brad Hudson. As a Gaucho she ran a Big West Conference and UCSB School Record at 10,000m with a 33:27.85 and won both the Conference 5k and 10k titles. Rothstein was also a NCAA All-American at 10,000m. In 2007 she was ranked in the Top-25 Americans for 10,000m and was on the 4th place US Ekiden team in Chiba, Japan. Out of Xavier Prep in Phoneix, AZ, she entered her senior year a 1600m best of 5:23. That year she lowered her mark to 4:58 and earned her a scholarship at UCSB.
DJ Ozan (camp fun coordinator) - A jack of all trades, Ozan was a prep star at 800m and 1600m out of Del Mar HS in the California Central Coast section before moving onto competing for West Valley College and then at UC-Santa Barbara where he graduated in 2004. Deciding running was not enough, Ozan pusued a Master's in classical opera at the infamous Manhattan School of Music in New York City while also pursuing his own soul and R&B career. Returning to California in 2007 and the Track & Field community, Ozan became a Men's & Women's Cross Country and Track & Field coach at Sothwest Los Angeles Community College, while continuing to give private voice lessons and performing in his free time.

Mike Miller - An
NAIA All-American at Linfield College, Miller went on to be a successful two-time
Olympic trial qualifier, five-time USATF qualifier, and one of 255 Americans
to run a sub 4:00 mile. Personal records also include 400 meter – 46.70, 800
meter – 1:46.98, 1500 meter – 3:38.10, 1 mile – 3:57.13 and 5000 meter– 13:58.22.
Ken Reeves - As Nordhoff's Boy's and Girl's
coach, Reeves has become California's all-time winningst State Meet Championship
coach. In 1999 he was named the United States Coach of the Year after breaking
the title record with eleven State Meet Championship wins for Nordhoff.
Joe Rubio -
Founder and owner of RunningWarehouse.com, Rubio is also an accomplished
coach and athlete. As a coach he has been the Asics Aggies Olympic Devlopment
and team coach since 1999. As an athlete Rubio was an Olympic Trials
qualifier in the marathon with a personal best of 2:18.06.

Chris White
- Now spending his time as an artist and architect, White
was previously the head Track & Field
Coach at Half Moon Bay High School, in Half Moon Bay, CA. He had a personal
best of 9:44 for 3200m out of high school and under Dolan's guidance and the
Gaucho Family he excelled through the years ending on the national stage his
senior year. That year in 2004, White got personal bests of 14:12 for 5000m
and 29:10 for 10,000m qualifying him for the NCAA National Championships. He
was also Big West Conference champion at 5000m in 2004. White in his sophomore
season was part of the NCAA Championship Cross Country squad that finished
17th in the nation in 2001. Chris also happens to be the artist of the painting
seen above (Gauchos on the S.B. Bluffs - 2003).

Tetlo Emmen - Emmen,
an 800m specialist is currently ranked 3rd in the United States and 23rd in
the world with an '06 best of 1:46.89. He won the '04 NCAA West
Regional Championship and has consistently
been one of the Regions best before his break through onto the national scene
this year. As a high school senior for West Torrance
High he ran 1:52.84 finishing 6th at the CA State Meet.
Amy Haapanen - Haapanen finished as one of the most decorated athletes in school history with records in the Shot Put (52'03.25"), Discus (170'11"), and Hammer Throw 206'03"). Along with school records, Haapanen set a Big West Conference record in the Hammer, qualified for two NCAA National Championships, and became an All-American in the Hammer in 2006, her senior year. Also, in her senior year she won Big West titles in the Shot Put, Hammer, and was runner-up in the Discus.
Liza Hitchner - A freshman on the UCSB squad, Hitchner came in from Half Moon Bay H.S. and had a great debut cross country season for the Gauchos. She finished within the top 20 at the Big West Championships and focused on the 5,000m during the track season. As a high school senior she held personal bests of 5:02 in the 1600m and 11:18.47 at 3200m

Micah Tyhurst - Out of Loyola H.S. in Los Angeles, CA Tyhurst has harnessed the Gaucho way dropping his times dramatically from High School. He has a 5,000m best of 14:17.72 and was also crowned the Big West 10,000m Champion after a 60 second last lap burned the field.
